God is bigger than I am!

A boy walked into a hardware store with his father. The owner of the store said “Son, why don’t you grab a handful of candy out of that jar?”

The boy just looked up at his father.

The store owner said again, “Son, why don’t you grab a handful of candy. They’re free.”

The boy just looked up at his father.

So the father just reached out his hand and took a handful of candy.

The father, walking out of the store, said to his son, “Why didn’t you take the candy?”

The boy said, “Dad, your hand is bigger than mine.”

That is my view of God. God wants to lavish his blessings on us. Jesus portrays the Father as generous beyond our imagination.

The story of our move is a story of the bigness of God. he provides for his children. I had forgotten in the 38 years we lived in the house how much is involved in moving. I figured that we could arrange for a pod to be delivered to our 5-bedroom house in Maryland, load it up with our stuff, and unload it into our 2-bedroom house in Florida. Our two sons would be home for Christmas; together we would tackle this project.

Our realtor came over to talk about the move, heard about our pod plans and wisely gave us three other moving company options: she said one is “great”, one is “ok” and one is “el cheapo”. Because Debbie was starting to have reservations about the pod,  I called “el cheapo”. They did not answer the phone or even get back when I left a message. I felt relieved and off the hook: I tried, it didn’t work, let’s stick with the pod.

That’s when we had dinner with somebody who knows something about moving. He asked me if the pod people would bring something to protect the driveway? He said with all the weight of the stuff put into the pod, it could ruin your driveway.

So I called “the great”  moving company. They were great. They were just what the realtor said. The grandson of the owner showed up and calculated how much weight was in the move. He said he would get the estimate for me by the end of the day, So I waited for his email.

His email did not come at the end of the day. (We had 4 days to cancel our pod or pay a penalty.) So once again I felt off the hook and “the great” company wasn’t all that great. They made a promise and didn’t keep it. Time was running out for our 4 days to cancel the pod.

It was then that my wife discovered in her email that he had sent the estimate. It was completely reasonable and comparable to multiple pod costs. We decided to ratify the contract. That may be one of the greatest changes we have ever made. They were great. God is bigger than us, knowing what we need when we need it.

I did not know at the time that my back would not allow me to carry anything into the pod, or truck, or future house. (Shortly after arriving in Florida, I would go through spinal surgery and get a complete back overhaul.) The movers would not only move stuff out of our house and wrap it carefully, but they would deliver and unwrap each item in the truck. God is much bigger than I am and He completely understood the situation. He was working through Debbie and the realtor; He was teaching me to follow Him, even when I think I had a good plan. God had a better plan to lavish His blessings on us. I just had to let Him reach into the jar and pull it out.
